Well, not really for me, since I'm not watching the game, but last night was Bad Movie night for some of my friends and me. Junk food, pasta fasul and ice cream (and a little rum) distributed among guests, we watched a lovely cavalcade of videos.Collapse )

Deadly Invasion: The Killer Bee Nightmare

There are certain mini-genres that seem to be the exclusive domain of B-movies. During a inventory clearance of a local video store I filled two mini-genre gaps in my collection. I can now say I own a Mexican wrestling movie and a movie about killer bees.

There are 12 killer bee movies on IMDB. The highest is rated a just barely above average 4.9 and the lowest a 2.2 out of 10. About half of them are made for TV movies. Mystery Science Theater, The Agony Booth and Jabootu.com have each featured a killer bee flick (The Deadly Bees, The Savage Bees and The Swarm, respectively). I'm not near brilliant enough to explain the phenomenon but killer bees and schlock go together perfectly.

Maybe it's because killer bee movies straddle the edge of the disaster movie genre (Dante's Peak, Towering Inferno, ect.) and the killer animals genre (Night of the Lepus, Deep Blue Sea). It's pretty easy to go wrong with movies like that and since killer bee death, while presumably quite horrific and painful in real life, is rather silly and uninteresting to watch in cinematic form. The writers tap deep into the killer animal and disaster genre playbooks to spice things up. IIRC The Swarm went as far as having a bee instigated nuclear power plant melt down at it's climax.

Deadly invasion has no such overblown set pieces. It was made on a budget that was merely adequate. Instead of The Swarm's slumming star Michael Caine we get a rent paying Robert Hays (Ted Striker of Airplane fame). Lacking a large location and effects budget Deadly Invasion keeps the tension high by having the bees be slightly more aggressive and intelligent than what one would think is realistic and having all the main characters be far, far more stupid than anyone could possibly believe.

Caution, this review contains spoilers, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, please do so. What with war in the Middle East, high gas prices and tornadoes every other day you need a good laugh.
